Meet Ervin E. Jones, MD, PhD, HCLD, FACOG

Ervin E. Jones, MD, PhD is our Physician Consultant and Scientific Director. Dr. Jones is former professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Jones is Board Certified in obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He received his Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Harbor- UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Jones completed his medical school and residency training at the University of California, Irvine. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Jones completed a Mellon Foundation fellowship in the reproductive sciences and a clinical fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Yale. Dr. Jones then joined the full-time faculty at Yale where he achieved the rank of professor. 

Dr. Jones has over 35 years of experience teaching and practicing reproductive endocrinology, infertility, in vitro fertilization, and advanced endoscopic surgery. He served as Director of Assisted Reproduction at Yale for over 13 years. Other pertinent positions held include: Chief of Clinical Services, Center for Reproductive Medicine; Director, Reproductive Endocrine Fellowship Program, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chair, Credentials Committee on Endoscopic Surgery, Yale-New Haven Hospital. In addition to his teaching, research and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Jones maintained a busy practice in infertility, advanced reproductive surgery and general reproductive endocrinology as a staff member of the Yale Medical Group and Yale New Haven Hospital. After leaving Yale, Dr. Jones entered private practice in Connecticut and then moved to private practice in Virginia. Dr. Jones holds active medical licenses in Virginia and Connecticut.

Dr. Jones has vast experience in treating infertility including assisted reproductive technologies (ART) involving the direct manipulation of eggs, sperm, and embryos for use in infertility treatment. Types of ART performed include sperm, egg, and embryo freezing for fertility preservation, in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), assisted hatching (AH) of embryos, and embryo transfer (ET). Dr. jones is highly experienced in preconception and preimplantation genetic screening, trophectoderm and polar body biopsy for aneuploidy screening, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to preclude specific inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease. Dr. Jones expertise also includes Third-Party Reproduction is used to achieve pregnancy in procedures such as sperm or egg donation, embryo adoption, gestational surrogacy and family balancing.

Dr. Jones’s expertise extends beyond teaching and medical practice – he has authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts and numerous chapters in textbooks on reproductive medicine and physiology. He is the recipient of several awards for prize papers at national meetings and has served as reviewer for several professional journals devoted to human reproduction and infertility. He is a former writer of Test Materials for Obstetrics and Gynecology (Step II), National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME/USMLE). Dr. Jones has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for NIH/NICHD Collaborative Programs in Reproductive Biology.

Dr. Jones is the recipient of several awards for his teaching and research including: the “Dean’s Medical Education Farr Prize”, Yale University School of Medicine, and the “Outstanding Teacher and Scholar” award for the National Medical Association, Section of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology “Excellence in Teaching” award, the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology teaching award, the National Medical Association’s Distinguished Physician, Teacher and Scholar award.  

Dr. Jones is a member of numerous medical societies, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the National Medical Association and American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Named as one of “America’s Top Docs” by Ladies Home Journal, Dr. Jones was honored as one of America’s Leading Physicians by Black Enterprise magazine. He was also featured in Northern Virginia magazine’s list of "Top-Rated Doctors."

Dr. Jones served as a member of the advisory group on assisted reproduction for the Connecticut Law Revision Commission which resulted in the Connecticut Mandate for Infertility Dr. Jones has been cited among America’s leading physicians in national magazines. Dr. Jones has been invited to discuss issues concerning infertility on television, radio and in print.

Dr. Jones is noted not only for his clinical excellence but also for his compassionate and patient-centric attitude. When asked what he finds most rewarding about treating infertile couples, he replied: “When I see patient’s faces when they first see their baby’s heartbeat on ultrasound”.
